Since Pathways Abroad began operating
in foreign countries, it has relied on community service as a way for students
and staff to give back to the community as well as learn about the value of
serving others. During the three years Pathways Abroad was stationed in
Argentina, students and staff formed relationships with local orphanages and a
children's hospital, donating toys to one orphanage and fundraising and renovating
facilities at another. In the time Pathways Abroad has been based in
Chile, students and staff have painted several churches and done landscaping
work for several families in need of assistance. The dynamics of
volunteering in the community can be complex and challenging due to the
language and cultural barriers students face, but students invariably find it
to be enriching both to the people they are serving and for their own sense of
being.
